Thirty Eighth Meeting of the Transpennine Topology Triangle

DEDICATED TO POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS!

Department of Mathematics
University of Manchester
Monday 20th January 2003

THIS MEETING WILL BE GEARED TO THE NEEDS OF BEGINNING POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS IN ALGEBRAIC TOPOLOGY, AND WILL CONSIST OF TWO MICRO-COURSES GIVEN BY RENOWNED EXPOSITORS OF THE SUBJECT!

Everyone else is welcome, of course, not least on the grounds that it is beneficial for existing staff and established students to get to know the newcomers who grace our three departments.

The afternoon schedule will be a little more crowded than usual, to accommodate four talks.

Programme

Talks will be in the Mathematics Tower, Room 9.05; tea and informal discussion will take place in the Brian Hartley Room, floor 6. We will meet in the BHR for coffee from 1100AM onwards.

Titles and speakers are as follows; notes are available via the links below.

Abstracts

Both micro-courses are designed to be accessible to first-year postgraduate students ...

Lunch will be taken locally (at the vegetarian "On the Eight Day", for example), and we expect to visit a local curry house (or similar) early in the evening.

Everyone who wishes to participate is welcome: we shall operate the usual arrangements for assistance with travel expenses. Please email Nige Ray nige@ma.man.ac.uk (or John Greenlees j.greenlees@sheffield.ac.uk, or John Hunton jrh7@mcs.le.ac.uk) if you are interested in attending, so that we can cater for appropriate numbers.

How to get there

If you need help in finding the Mathematics (the tallest building on Oxford Road!), there is more information at University of Manchester, Department of Mathematics Homepage
The meeting is partially supported by a Scheme 3 grant from the London Mathematical Society.
